8bitdo have been around for quite some time now. They’re well known for making excellent, third party controllers for Nintendo Switch, that also happens to work on Windows systems as well.
One of their best products though isn’t even a controller. The 8bitdo Gbros adapter is something that is really needed by any Smash Bros hard core player.
What is the G Bros Adapter?
In short, the G Bros Adapter is a way for you to use different controllers on your Nintendo Switch. It was primarily made with Smash Bros Ultimate in mind. By having this, and a GameCube controller, it allows you to play Super Smash Bros Ultimate with arguably the best controller available for the game.
Of course, the Pro Controller from Nintendo does a great job, but there’s just something about playing Super Smash Bros Ultimate with a GameCube controller that feels right. The good news is that any GameCube controller will work with this, and not just the ones that were made in the run up to Ultimate.
Ease of Use
So the question is, how easy is it to use the G Bros Adapter? Bloody easy! Plug the controller into the adapter, sync it with the Switch and that’s it. There’s no messy setup up needed for this, it really is as simple as that. The good news though is that it’s not just for GameCube controllers. This nifty little box has a connector port on the other end of it. This port allow you to connect the controllers that came with the NES and SNES Classic consoles, as well as a Wii Classic controller. As an added bonus, you can even have a turbo mode added to the game. It’s not something I’ve ever been a fan of, but it’s good to know the option is there. What I did like is that there is a button to let you take screenshots. This is a nice little feature for Switch games since the GameCube controller doesn’t have a screenshot button.
In the testing of this for the review, I tried my original GameCube controller from 2002, a third party Logic 3 controller I got when I subscribed to NGC magazine and the Smash Bros GameCube controller from 2018. All of these controllers performed flawlessly. There was no noticeable lag that put me off my game and I couldn’t genuinely tell that I wasn’t plugged in directly to the console. It’s also good to know that you don’t need to have one of the Smash GameCube controllers for this device, and that the old, original controllers will work with this.
Cross Platform Compatibility
What I really like about the G Bros Adapter is the fact that it’s not just for Nintendo Switch. It can also be used on Windows and Mac OS as well for playing games. This is a great option for those that want to use their retro controllers for side scrollers that they may have picked up on Steam. All of the controllers listed above can be used in Windows and Mac OS as well. There’s a small switch on the top of the adapter that will let you select Switch or X Input mode. Considering how well games play with the GameCube controller, playing a game on your PC feels great using it. It simply connects to the PC via Bluetooth.
Value for Money
The G Bros Adapter is normally sold for less than £20, unless a third party is selling it online. This might seem like a pretty expensive outlay for an adapter. However, when you factor in the fact that the official Nintendo Switch adapter to use GameCube controllers is £40, this is a massive saving. The other benefit of using the G Bros is that it lets you use your controllers without being tied to the Switch. After spending years with wireless controllers, it’s a bit of a culture shock to go back to being tied to the console with a cable. This is also a really good way to use those SNES and NES Classic controllers on the Switch Online service.
